Michael D. Schmidt’s research interests include twentieth century American literature, literary theory, Marxism, forms of community, and gender and sexuality. His work has appeared in several journals and the anthology Modernism and Unreadability (Presses Universitaires de la Méditerranée). He is currently editing his manuscript, The Materialism of the Encounter, in which he explores queer aesthetic innovation as an engagement with the uneven terrain of sexual history and global capital.

Professional Experience

In addition to CCS, Michael also teaches in the English department and Gender, Sexuality, and Women’s Studies program at Wayne State University. His courses there cover theories and representations of gender and sexuality, American literature, and modernism and sexuality. Additionally, he spent three years working at Criticism: A Quarterly for Literature and the Arts, first as the editorial assistant, then as the managing editor.
