Sometimes it is OK to not be OK. That is the central theme in the work of Kresge Arts in Detroit Fellow and screenwriter Toni Cunningham.

After graduating from Wayne State University with a degree in Media Arts and Studies and spending years as a script analyst, she honed her skills behind the computer and the camera.

Now, whether she is writing a dystopian science-fiction, a romantic comedy or a coming-of-age drama the goal of her work is to always let the reader know that “other” is perfect.

Professional Experience

Toni is a local screenwriter and filmmaker. In 2018, she was awarded a Kresge Arts in Detroit Fellowship for her accomplishments in screenwriting.

She previously worked as a script analyst in New York City for many high-profile screenwriting competitions and production companies, including The Writers Lab, BlueCat Screenplay Competition, and Goldcrest Films Production Company. By reading hundreds of scripts, she taught herself not only how to critique and give coverage, but also to write screenplays herself.

She has written 7 short screenplays, 2 feature screenplays and a pilot. She recently directed a short film based on one of her screenplays titled Good Grief, which is currently making the rounds at in the festival circuit.
