Laura Kovick

With research interests that reflect her dedication to student learning and equity in the classroom, Laura Kovick’s research is focused on equitable writing and grading practices, disciplinary writing, and writing pedagogy, including multimodal composition. Recent work has included presenting and publishing on topics such as a kairotic approach to writing program leadership, multimodality in the first-year writing course, developing writing support for graduate programs, and the challenges and opportunities of collaborating with writing center staff to construct a DEI statement. In addition to presenting her work at conferences, such as the Conference on College Composition and Communication and the American Literature Association, Laura’s interest in interdisciplinary writing and commitment to collaboration among programs and faculty has led to publications in journals as varied as Dimensions of Critical Care Nursing to the Asian Journal of Social Science.
Professional Experience
Before joining CCS, Laura’s broad range of instructional experience included serving as a writing instructor and Associate Director of the First-Year Writing Program at Eastern Michigan University and as a member of the University Writing Center leadership team. As a director of the First-Year Writing Program, Laura trained graduate-assistant instructors in writing theory and pedagogy. Her work in both writing center leadership and as a writing consultant for faculty and graduate students included collaborating with faculty to provide course- and discipline-specific writing workshops to students and assisting faculty with developing and scaffolding writing assignments.
