Detroit Opera House Looks to CCS Alums to Create Unforgettable Immersive Experience

September 9, 2022

Through a collaboration with the Detroit Opera House and the L.A. Philharmonic, three College for Creative Studies (CCS) alumni created the animated digital experiences for “The Valkyries,”set to run Sept. 17, 18, and 20.

Eli McCaffrey (Entertainment Arts, ‘22), Thomas Hamilton (Entertainment Arts, ‘22), and Kayla Wenzel (Entertainment Arts, ‘20) assisted in the development of a retro-futuristic environment for audiences to enjoy as they watch the most famous act in Wagner’s Ring Cycle: beginning with “Ride of the Valkyries” and ending with “Magic Fire Music.” These immersive experiences were created using Unreal Engine, the same 3D computer graphics game engine used to create Fortnite.

This other-worldly production uses green screens and 20 foot projection walls to simultaneously place performers in a stunning digital environment as they perform onstage, resulting in a mesmeric experience that will have the performers towering over the audience (and each other) alongside other awe-inspiring moments.

The LA Times recalls that the premiere at the Hollywood Bowl was “a one-night miracle.”
