An exhibit of 17 artists enrolled in advanced sculpture classes at College for Creative Studies (CCS) led by Chido Johnson and Columbus College of Art and Design (CCAID) led by Danielle Julian Norton. The artists worked collaboratively to create sculptures based on Guy Debord’s theory of the Dérive.
Students in Detroit and Columbus went on a wandering walk together, communicating through text, deciding collectively which way to turn, sharing what they noticed along the way, and exchanging photos, videos, notes, and audio about their respective journeys. After collaboratively deciding on three objects, sounds, and experiences from their walk, students produced work in response to their dérive.
“One can derive alone, but all indications are that the most fruitful numerical arrangement consists of several groups of two or three people who have reached the same level of awareness, since cross-checking these different groups’ impressions makes it possible to arrive at more objective conclusions.”
