Roland’s research explores the convergence of physical and digital interactions within connected product ecosystems, with particular focus on IoT devices and spatial computing interfaces. His work investigates how emerging technologies—including AR/VR/XR, voice interfaces, and AI-driven interactions—shape human-centered design across multiple touch points. Through his practice and teaching, he examines the evolution from traditional 2D interfaces to spatial computing environments, developing pedagogical approaches that prepare designers for increasingly complex, multi-modal experiences. His current research involves creating frameworks for seamless cross-platform experiences that bridge the gap between industrial design and digital interaction.
Professional Experience
A designer-educator working at the intersection of digital and physical product design, Roland has spent nearly a decade shaping connected experiences in both industry and academia. He began his career focusing on mobile and web interfaces before developing expertise in IoT and connected product ecosystems at BISSELL Homecare, where he serves as Design Lead for BISSELL Connect & IoT. His work encompasses the complete digital transformation of connected home products, from mobile applications to voice interfaces and AR implementations. Since 2023, he has taught at the College for Creative Studies as a Graduate Adjunct Instructor, developing innovative curriculum for automotive and XR design studios.
