Communication Arts magazine, a professional journal for those involved in creativity in visual communications, has announced the winners of its 31st annual Interactive Competition. Of the 290 entries, 33 projects were selected by a jury of creative professionals. CCS alumnus Luke Fabricatore’s (’24 CD) project “Price of the Prompt” was selected as Best-in-Show.

“The Price of the Prompt,” delves into a topic not widely discussed: the significant resources consumed by generative AI. This project is perhaps one of the first to make sense of the disparate and ambiguous global data that is publicly accessible on the topic. Crafted with Blender and interactive JavaScript animations, It dynamically compares user versus global consumption in real time, separated into three main areas: water consumption for cooling data centers, power usage to operate these centers, and the financial costs of running AI models.
