SUMMARY:When The Land Speaks: Carlos Diaz
DESCRIPTION:Opening Reception: Saturday\, October 11\, 7-9pm \nExhibition Dates: Saturday\, October 11–Saturday\, December 13\, 2025 \nGallery Hours: Tuesdays–Saturdays\, 11am-5pm \nWhen the Land Speaks is both an installation piece and exhibition of photographs\, and is part of the Society for Photographic Education Midwest Regional Conference. This exhibition is made possible by a 2024 Guggenheim Fellowship and the College for Creative Studies’ Woodward Lecture Series. The first body of work in the exhibition\, “Unknown Landmarks: Detroit Before the Ruin”\, are photographs made in Detroit\, MI between 1980 and 1989. The second\, “History\, Memory\, Myth: The Confederate Monument in the American South”\, is a body of work started in 2017 and is ongoing. Although the two projects are far apart in distance and years\, they are related nonetheless by the photographer’s ongoing interest in what the landscape can reveal about history\, culture and politics\, past\, present\, future and the unseen forces that shape our environment. Both projects represent a simple notion which is\, observing and critiquing the landscape with attentiveness\, intention and care\, yields dialogue. \nJoin us for an opening reception from 7-9pm on Saturday\, October 11\, directly following Diaz’s Woodward Lecture at the Wendell W. Anderson Auditorium. More information about the lecture can be found here.  \nFree parking is available the night of the lecture and opening reception at the CCS Brush Street parking structure. The entrance is on Brush just north of Frederick.
