SUMMARY:Making Better Things: A Sustainable Material Showcase with Daniel Liden and CCS Students
DESCRIPTION:Reception Date: Friday\, September 18\, 2026\nReception Time: 7-9 p.m.\nExhibition Dates: Friday\, September 18 – Saturday\, October 3\, 2026 \nRather than waiting for the circular economy to be defined for us\, designers are in a unique position to proactively shape it. This pop-up exhibition of CCS student work created under the instruction of Daniel Liden\, a Copenhagen-based designer and author of “Better Things: Materials for Sustainable Design\,” takes alternative materials as the starting point and explores the many opportunities that they present in terms of replacing conventional virgin and non-renewable materials in contemporary industrial design. \nBio: Daniel is a designer with a passion for materials and processes. Over the course of his career\, Daniel’s work has become increasingly focused on sustainability\, and 2024 saw the publication of his first book Better Things: Materials for Sustainable Design. In a market flooded with vague eco-claims and surface-level material swaps\, Daniel takes a structured\, data-driven approach to sustainable product development\, as evidenced in his work for leading international brands like Nespresso\, Logitech\, and BIC. \nWorkshop Description: Students at CCS will need to develop the skills necessary to navigate a growing range of alternative materials and processes that are emerging in response to new sustainability legislation and changing consumer expectations. Designing with these new materials and processes often involves a steep learning curve\, not least in terms of being able to make decisions on where to focus efforts to maximize positive impact\, but also being able to communicate those decisions clearly and transparently. This workshop defines a wide range of creative approaches to circular design\, preparing CCS students for a career where decisions about material selection will face greater scrutiny than ever before. \n

This lecture by Daniel Liden\, a Copenhagen-based designer and author of “Better Things: Materials for Sustainable Design\,” takes alternative materials as the starting point and explores the many opportunities that they present in terms of replacing conventional virgin and non-renewable materials in contemporary industrial design.  \nAlternative materials have a huge role to play in reducing the environmental impact of products\, and Daniel’s lecture will cover a range of approaches to designing with these materials without losing sight of delivering valuable\, durable\, and accessible user experiences\, including an introduction to exciting new work on circular materials by CCS students that will be on display during Detroit Month of Design. \nThere will be a Toyota Lecture on this topic featuring Daniel Liden on Friday\, 4/18\, at the CCS Taubman Center\, directly followed by an opening reception in the Valade Family Gallery for a pop-up exhibition of sustainable design work created by CCS students in tandem with Daniel Liden during his residency.

SUMMARY:Woodward Lecture Series\, in partnership with MOCAD: Pat Phillips
DESCRIPTION:Join artist Pat Phillips for an introduction to his creative process and a closer look at Primer Mover\, his first museum presentation at MOCAD. Through an ongoing partnership as part of the renowned CCS Woodward Lecture Series\, CCS and MOCAD bring artists\, students\, and the public together through shared learning and dialogue. Centered on new and recent works\, Primer Mover considers labor\, value\, and the everyday materials that shape contemporary life. Phillips will discuss the research\, material choices\, and lived experiences that inform his work\, offering insight into the ideas behind Primer Mover and his evolving artistic practice. \n  \nPat Phillips (b. 1987 Lakenheath\, England) was raised in Louisiana. In 2019\, he presented work at the Whitney Biennial at the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York. Solo exhibitions include Consumer Reports\, Jeffrey Deitch\, New York; Strange Suburb\, M+B\, Los Angeles\, CA; and It Was Sunny\, but Then It Started to Rain\, PPOW\, New York. He has participated in residencies at the Vermont Studio Center\, Skowhegan School of Painting & Sculpture and Joan Mitchell Center. His first publication Pat Phillips: Quality Control was released in June 2023. He has also been featured in Juxtapoz Magazine and Hyperallergic. In 2024 he was a fellow at Temple University\, Philadelphia\, PA where he was included in the 3-person exhibition\, Black Like That: Our Lives As Living Praxis. His work can be found in the collections of the Whitney Museum of American Art\, New York\, NY; Albright-Knox Art Gallery\, Buffalo\, NY; Block Museum of Art\, Evanston\, IL; and New Orleans Museum of Art\, New Orleans\, LA\, among others. Pat Phillips lives and works in Pennsylvania.

SUMMARY:I AM WE: The Re:Evolutionary Art of Wayne Curtis\, Emory Douglas\, and Yusuf Lateef
DESCRIPTION:In her book the Next American Revolution: Sustainable Activism for the Twenty-First Century\, Grace Lee Boggs writes “History is not the past. It is the stories we tell about the past. How we tell these stories – triumphantly or self-critically\, metaphysically or dialectally – has a lot to do with whether we cut short or advance our evolution as human beings.” \nThe exhibition “I AM WE” brings together three artists whose practices recontextualize American history through the lens of revolutionary movements\, from the avant-garde legacy of Black midcentury abstract expressionists to the self-determination and liberatory politics of the Black Panther Party. Individually\, and collectively the works chosen for this exhibition speak from each artist’s lived experience – drawing from their unique roles as teachers\, organizers\, philosophers\, and cultural creators. Connected by a visual language that balances care\, community\, and resistance\, the work in this exhibition affirms humanity while challenging widely held assumptions of history.  \nCurtis and Douglas bridge the Black radical tradition between their respective homes of Detroit\, MI and Oakland\, CA – two cities connected through a legacy of visionary organizing. Through Douglas’s prolific career he championed the anti-imperialist critique of the Black Panther Party whose deep understanding of symbolism through visual language forever changed the cultural lexicon of resistance. \nLateef and Curtis share a profound philosophy of education as a tool for liberation. They have devoted decades to teaching both in and outside of conventional educational systems – from Curtis’s Art in the Garden program at Feedom Freedom Farm and programming at the James + Grace Lee Boggs Center in Detroit\, MI to Youth Arts Alliance in Southeast Michigan\, Toledo School for the Arts\, University of Toledo\, and Radiant City Arts in Lateef’s home of Toledo\, OH.  \nPresented here in relation to one another\, these three artists imagine worlds that can be possible through overlapping visual languages and common values. This exhibition charges the viewer to ask themselves\, where do you find yourself in the arc of justice?

DESCRIPTION:Wasserman Projects and the College for Creative Studies (CCS) proudly present this event as part of CCS’s esteemed Woodward Lecture Series. \nPolly Apfelbaum’s lecture “A Full Circle\,” will look back over the forty-year history of her hybrid and multi-valent practice. From her first one-person show in 1986 to her current exhibition “A Woman’s Circle” at Wassermann Projects\, she has promiscuously navigated between painting\, sculpture\, craft\, textiles\, and installation\, recycling and rethinking ideas from Abstract Expressionism\, Minimalism\, and Popular culture. \nPolly Apfelbaum (b. 1955) lives and works between New York City and Arcadia\, PA. Apfelbaum studied painting and printmaking at the Tyler School of Art in Pennsylvania\, receiving a B.F.A. in 1978. Apfelbaum’s kaleidoscopic works feature lively color\, geometric forms\, and non-representational subjects. Her work incorporates textiles\, clay\, found objects\, and other tactile elements traditionally associated with craft and domesticity. The prolific artist has mounted nearly 60 solo exhibitions worldwide and has participated in hundreds of group exhibitions. She has received awards and grants from organizations including Anonymous Was a Woman\, the Pollock-Krasner Foundation\, and the Joan Mitchell Foundation. \nThe lecture will take place in the Wendell B. Anderson\, Jr. Auditorium in the Walter B. Ford II Building on the CCS Ford Campus (301 E. Frederick\, Detroit\, MI\, 48202). Free parking is available in the CCS Brush St lot (on Brush just north of Frederick).
